#MakeUpCrush: Put your best face forward

Us beauty/make-up/fashion bloggers live to try out different things be it skincare products, outfit styles but also make up looks! That’s just want we thrive on. However there are times when ‘experimenting’ with something new is just out of question. This could be an important work meeting/event, a night out with your bestie, a date etc… and on these occasions you wanna make sure you look your absolute BEST!

Well, I, too have my ‘perfect face kit’ and that’s the one I bring on when I need to be 100% confident that I look good.

So what’s in the kit? Let’s dive in:

– To make sure my foundation stays put all day/night, I use the Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Primer

– I find the Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet gives me the best coverage yet looks so natural. I love love love it! Applied with my Inglot Pro Blending Sponge, it’s quick, easy and fool-proof

– To conver/brighten the under eye area, I like to apply a little Maybelline FitME Concealer

– I did prep my eyelids to make sure my shadow stays on and here I’ve used a sample of the Urban Decay Long-lasting Eyeshadow Primer and it is fab!

– Onto brows: Of course, it has got to be the Mac Eye Brows Pencil in ‘Spike’. This one I only use in the evening and I find it isn’t ‘natural-looking’ enough for daytime.

– On the eyes, I made up a quick smoky-look using my beloved Urban Decay Naked 2 palette: 1. Foxy all over the lid to prep and unify the base shade 2. YDK on the mobile part of the lid 3. Busted in the crease to give the eye definition and 4. Half Baked in the inner tear duck to brighten everything up

– Lashes were of course curled with my MAC Full Lash Curler and I applied 2 x coats of the Sephora Outrageous Volume mascara in black. I also like to apply a tiny bit of the Dior Addict It-Lash mascara in 872 (the flashy pink one!) at the end of the lashes to give the whole look a little ‘funky’ twist and add a touch of fun!

– I contoured my face (slightly!) with the Urban Decay Naked Flushed palette. I especially love the blush

– Since I went for a bit of a dramatic eye look, I kept the lips natural and just carried my clear Labello Hydra Care balm.

And voila! The ‘perfect’ face kit, Carine’s way! The whole thing took me about 20 mins so not too bad!!

What are your fail-proof make-up items?!

#SeptemberMakeUpCrush (the French Edit): Dans ma trousse #Septembre13

#BeautyCrush: WOMF #1

In case you were wondering, WOMF stands for What’s On My Face!!

Every month I shall blog about my skin care routine, the products I am using, what I love about them and what I don’t! In doing so, I hope to inspire you to try out new things!

As always, please feel free to share your favourite products, recommend some I should try out etc…! I LOVE to hear your feedback :).

WOMF #1 (July 2013)

What's on my face - July 2013

This month I’m using:

  • Bioderma Sebium Purifying & Foaming Cleansing Gel

I’ve used the Neutrogena Deep Clean for a few weeks and absolutely loved it (see my review here) but when I ran out, I went back to using my good ol’ Bioderma cleaner. I had forgotten how I use to love this one too! It just gets rid of all the make-up and dirt that can accumulate on your face after a long & hard day of labour! It doesn’t dry out your skin and leaves it all refreshed, cleaned & polished!

  • Soap & Glory ‘Scrub your nose in it’

Twice a week I make sure to give my skin a little exfoliation to make sure I get rid all dead cells, clean out my clogged pores (in the weather your skin can build up a lot of oil!) and just give it a good polish. One drugstore brand I discovered back when I lived in the UK is Soap & Glory! I just loved the packaging, the quirky product names and gave it a try! I’ve now used their scrub for a few years and still love it.

Bonus beauty tip: Layer the scrub all over your face and leave it on for a few minutes for a quick deep cleansing mask

  • Dermalogica UltraCalming Serum Concentrate

When the weather gets this hot, my skin gets ubber sensitive and just goes red in the T-zone. I recently started using the Dermalogica UltraCalming Serum which came highly recommended by one of my “beautista” friend. So far, it has given me great results. The redness has gone down dramatically and it seems my skin has adopted it so I shall carry on using it twice a day, throughout the Summer.

  • Yves Rocher ‘Cure Solutions’ Eye Cream

Right this one you can’t actually get it here sorry! Yves Rocher is a French brand, very similar to the Body Shop whereby they sell natural products. I get my YR fix every time I go home and have been loving their eye cream for years! PLUS it’s super cheap! Like 2-3 euros so bargain I say! The cream is green which (apparently) cancels out any dark shadows under the eye… I don’t really get dark circles so certainly won’t recommend using this particular product if you suffer from it but with me, it does the ticket!

I’m almost at the end of the tube and intend of switching to a new one over the next week or so… watch this space!

  • Dior HydraLife Skin Perfect Pore Refining Moisturizer

This is my latest ‘lux’ beauty buy! I was on the look out for a new moisturizer and thought I would treat myself to a little Dior! Why not?! I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and am not unhappy with it! It does claim to soothe & uniform your skin tone, buff out your pores and smooth out small lines… I’m not saying this isn’t a great product but I am missing the WOW factor here… haven’t seen any difference to my previous (MUCH cheaper) day cream from Dermalogica.

I’ll give it another few weeks and see what happens!

  • Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF30

I said it and I’ll say it again, you MUST wear an SPF, every single day! No exceptions and NO excuses! And because I actually do walk the talk (or is it talk the walk… mmmm…) I do wear one which I apply liberally over my entire face & neck (oh and ears! We always forget about the ears but they do catch the sun too!!!).

I discovered the Neutrogena UltraShee Dry-Touch SPF a couple of months ago and haven’t looked back! (Read my full review here). I use the SPF30 but if your skin is a light or very pale, they have SPF50 and evern SPF100!

There you have it! I’ve already selected a few bits & bobs I’m gonna be using next month during my holidays and cannot wait to report on these!

Until then, stay glam and WEAR YOUR SPF EVERYDAY!

#EventCrush: And the Winner is….

And no, we’re not talking about the Cannes Festival here!

We’re talking about one of the most awaited Awards ceremonies in Dubai where we will be celebrating one of my favorite things on earth. BEAUTY PRODUCTS!

You’ve guessed it right, we’re talking VIVA Beauty Awards 2013!

And oh boy, I CANNOT WAIT to find out who the winners will be in each categories.

I was asked to cast my vote and so here are MY selections:

  • Best Perfume – White Musk, The Body Shop
  • Best Mascara – The Colossal Volum’ Express Maybelline
  • Best Nail Polish – Bourjois So Laque (see my post on these beautiful babies here!)
  • Best Hair Salon – I pulled my joker card for this one as sadly, I’ve never tried any of the 4 nominees
  • Best Anti-Ageing Product – Guerlain Orchidee Imperiale
  • Best Hair Product – Kerastase Elixir Ultime
  • Best Face Moisturiser – Dermalogica (AGESmart) Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 (all the way! See my post on Dermalogica products here.)
  • Best Lipstick – Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Venis a Levres
  • Best Body Product – Mama Mio Boob Tube and Neck Fermer

I was also asked to share my very own glam beauty secrets, including the products I tend to splurge on (there’s quite a few I must admit) and the ones I save on.

So, there a few (actually more than just a few) things where I would go for high-end/luxury brands. One of them is perfume. I will never ever buy something that’s not got a renowned French or Italian name on it! I always have 2 or 3 perfumes going at the same time. I wear different ones on different occasions OR, and this is something I have discovered here in the Middle East, I would ‘layer’ them, from the lightest to the strongest fragrance. My current favorites: Chanel Coco Noir, Miss Dior Cherie, The One Dolce & Gabanna. Remember than when it comes to perfumes, the more concentrated the essences & oils, the more expensive the bottle….

Other than that, anything that goes on my skin, be it skin care products or make-up, I also tend to slurge on. As you well know, I am a die-hard Dermalogica fan! Make-up, I wear a lot of Benefit stuff, MAC or Chanel. Oh and eye cream is another one! I use Clinique All About Eyes but will be switching to Creme de la Mer (I look at it as a long-term investment!). I’d like to give a special mention to the best Eyeliner I’ve ever used is the Fork Liner from Bassam Fattouh. See my review here.

So, what do I save on? Well, shower gels, body scrubs & moisturizers where I would definitively choose the drugstore products (Dove shower gels & body lotions are fab!). Shampoos & conditioners too. I use L’Oreal however, would make sure to invest in a good hair mask (currently crushing on Kerastase Masque Elixir Ultime) and styling products (again Kerastase Elixir & Initialist Scalp Serum).

Voting for the VIVA Awards 2013 is now closed but the winners will be revealed on Ahlan!Live website on 23rd May so watch this space!!

I’ll be sure to share the results on my blog.

Until then….

#BeautyCrush: Dream BB Creams

The question here isn’t “Have you heard of BB Creams?” but rather “Why aren’t you using them yet??”!!

BB Creams have now been around for a while, yet, some of my Glam Friends aren’t using them? OMG! You NEED to OK? They are the next best thing after hair straighteners & the Ipad!

BB Creams moisturize the skin, even out skin tone, fight wrinkles, imperfections & dullness, they even have an SPF! ALL in 1 single (albeit pretty) tube! They simply ROCK!

Not sure which one to buy or use? Well here is a review of my 3 absolute favorites! (There are thousands out there and I haven’t obviously tried them all BUT if you want more info on BB Creams check out this article from ‘Dailymakeover.com‘ and this review fromhudabeauty.com’)

Garnier

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector

This is actually the first one I ever bought and used it for a few weeks. The texture is fab and smooth on very easily. The shade (medium) is a good match to my natural skin tone and evens out the skin very well. It is however a little too ‘greasy’ for my liking but if your skin is normal to dry, this one is perfect for you!  This one also contains an SPF15.

Loreal nude magicL’Oreal Bare Skin Beautifier

I got this one a year ago at the Doha Airport Duty Free as it hadn’t launched over here in the UAE yet. I liked it immediately  The texture is a little different here… it feels a little ‘rough’ and the ‘grey-ish’ colour is can be off-putting at first BUT when applied, it transforms to match your skin colour, evens out your skin tone and give it a matte finish which I loved! It has an SPF12 which is a little light for the Middle Eastern sun so I would usually wear sunblock on top of it (Min. SPF20). Best for oily skins.

Dior Dior Hydra Life BB Cream

And there is my STAR BB Cream! This one is AMAZING! Albeit it is a little more expensive (AED290) BUT it is worth every single dirhams, trust me!

The texture offers more of a ‘full coverage’ than the others. It feels definitely more ‘luxurious’ and just blends perfectly. I am using the medium shade which works well with my skin tone! The best thing is, this BB cream has an SPF30!

A lot of the beauty bloggers have favored this one :)

Now, I can’t wait to try the new CC Creams!!! Will do a post/review of those soon I promise.
